about

“Into The Anthropocene” presents an ecological history of humanity by chronicling the path that Homo sapiens took to become, in the words of author Yuval Noah Harari, "the deadliest species in the annals of planet earth." Commissioned by choreographer Kristin Draucker for the Periapsis Open Series in collaboration with violinist Todd Reynolds, “Into The Anthropocene” explores the implications of our impact on Earth over three short movements.

The Anthropocene is a proposed epoch distinguished from our present era (the Holocene epoch) by significant changes in our planet's ecosphere caused by human activities. We are losing species, whole ecosystems and genes at an ever increasingly rapid rate. Today, species disappear each year at a rate hundreds of times faster than when humans arrived on the scene. As a species known for 100,000 years to bury our dead, it is amazing that we have such little respect for the death of other species.

Given the environmental impacts of human industry, it is conceivable that we are heading into a bleak future in which biodiversity has ceased to develop and we will be left to share an overpopulated, overheated, resource-depleted planet.
